Diving and scuba diving

Province of Grosseto

Island of Giglio  –  Isola del Giglio

Most of the dives are not too difficult, but the real attraction is to be surrounded by red sea fans, visible over 35 meters deep, dotting the seabed inhabited by a rich marine life. In deeper waters, you can spot schools of tuna and barracuda, and moray eels, lobster, and grouper in the numerous holes of the rocks.

The most famous and popular diving spots on the Island of Giglio are:

Piantina Immersioni

1.    Cala Cupa (42°22′8.03″N 10°55′4.09″E)  – (15 – 30 meters)
The area is rich in archaeological finds, red and yellow sea fans.
2.    Le Scole (42°21′20.4″N 10°55′47.8″E) – (15 – 40 meters)
The place is suitable for both beginners and experts. There are red gorgonians
and yellow and worms. The area is rich in archaeological finds, red and yellow sea fans.
3.    Punta del Fenaio (42°23′19.7″N 10°52′48.9″E)
This is a vertical wall for experienced divers submerging to 90 meters, rich in fauna with the rare star gorgon, and sometimes, the St. Peter’s fish.
4.    Punta delle Secche (42°23′00.7″N 10°52′43.4″E)  – (15 – 50 meters)
Rich yellow and red sea fans, and is frequented by rare sunfish.
5.    Punta di Capel Rosso (42°18′55.61″N 10°55′11.86″E) – (20 – 40 meters)
Formed by granite rocks which form a well-toned landslide. It frequently harbors snappers and sometimes tuna.
6.    Scoglio del Corvo (42°20′19.2″N 10°53′22.4″E) – (15 -70 meters)
The rock walls extend offshore and steeply descend into the deep, creating canyons covered with sponges and yellow sea fans. Beware of the strong current.
7.    Scoglio della Cappa (42°21′0.79″N 10°52′49.33″E)
Suited for easy immersions up to 15 meters, with a characteristic sandy bottom populated by Posidonia where sometimes seahorses can be found.
8.    Scoglio di Pietrabona (42°19′48.9″N 10°53′57.2″E) – (20 – 50 meters)
The rocks are covered with yellow gorgonians, tunicates, and worms. Deep-sea lobster and sunfish can be spotted.
9.   Secca di Pignocchi, Secca delle Secchi  e Tralicci  (5 – 45 meters)
Located in the bay of Campese it forms a parallel elongated chain to the coast with large granite boulders where you can watch the colorful corals.
10.    Zampo di Gatto  (27 – 50 meters)
In the stretch between Punta Torricella Punta Corby (close to Punta del Capel Rosso), the seabed harbors gorgonians and sponges. Below 50 meters a series of peaks and walls can be found where lobsters, scorpion fish, and moray eels hide.

Monte Argentario

It is one of the most popular sports along the coast of Monte Argentario and the surrounding islands.  This area is a paradise for beginner and expert divers because of the variety of easy to reach diving spots, the natural beauty, underwater shipwrecks, and the various depths that can be reached.

The coast is mostly rocky, with slopes that descend to different depths. An easy immersion for recreational diving is Punta Window where, at a depth of only 10-15 meters, you can see corals, sea fans, anemones, octopus, starfish, eels, lobsters, crabs, and sunfish.
